Environment, Travel & Food In A Time Of Change

Like it or not, the world changed in 2020/21. Lots of little changes – smart phones with cameras connected to social media in everyone’s hands, changing global climate, civil unrest, drought, floods,…and other changes gathering for several years and in 2020 Covid 19 finally pushed us over the edge. It has happened before and it will happen again, perhaps with different causes. Living through this step-change also showed us the variety of response to change. From acceptance and embracing change to outright rejection and resistance to change. The last couple of years have been a microcosm of human response to change throughout time.

Our surroundings, the environment, both affects who we are – and we in turn affect our environment. Our environment affects how we live and what we eat and how we behave. Unfortunately our environment also bears the brunt of our mistakes. Once changed, it can never really be fully restored.

When humans figured out the earth was a sphere they naturally wanted to travel around it. In 1522 the Magellan-Elcano expedition took 1082 days for the first successful circumnavigation by sailing ship. In 1924 a US Army Air Force team took 175 days to complete the same task by airplane. The Concorde did the same in 31 hours 27 minutes and 47 seconds. The time to travel has reduced drastically over time, but sometimes it can be just as complicated as it was back in 1519!

As travel becomes more common, various ethnic cultures and their traditions have also spread, and in the process – changed. Ancient Romans (the ancestors of todays Italians?) ate weird stuff like dromedary (camel) feet, flamingoes and parrots. Thankfully these seem to have fallen out of favor now. Fast food chains only came into being in 1921 when White Castle opened its first restaurant in Wichita, Kansas – but over the last 100 years the fast food concept has spread to almost every corner of the earth!
